The Evening Starts When I Decide

The Evening Starts When I Decide

I wasn't deciding anything. I was waiting for the evening to arrive on its own.

Living in Tuscany changed that a little. Here the light goes soft around seven, and the village slows down. My neighbor Elena once told me she doesn't wait for the evening. She decides when it starts, and then she does a few small things that tell her the day is over.

So I tried it with three of my own:

Close the shutters. The room changes color, and the house gets quiet.

Put my phone on the kitchen counter, not on the nightstand.

Sit in the chair by the window, and don't get up for anything that can wait until morning.

The first week I felt silly. Sitting with nothing to do felt like wasting time. By the second week I noticed I got into bed less rushed. I wasn't falling asleep any faster. I just felt more settled.

These are habits I keep because they settle me. I can't promise they'll do anything for your sleep or mood. If something feels wrong, see a doctor.

Some nights I forget. Then I decide again the next evening. That is the whole method.

I put a short evening routine in my Sleep After 40 workbook, with space to try these steps and see what fits your own days.
